Why Skills as Data, not as Words?

Skills define the professional attributes of Knowledge, Experience, Use of Tooling and Equipment, Behaviours, and or Leadership. For centuries we have recorded these skills as words - words on position descriptions, job ads, resumes, performance reviews, etc - but words are very difficult to quantify.  For instance, we all know that ‘years of experience’ is no guarantee of broad or advanced skills, and that claims and interpretations of terms such as ‘Senior’ or ‘Experienced’ vary widely.

As such, for too long, key decisions in Talent Acquisition and Human Resources have relied on imprecise keyword matching and pure gut feel based on the ambiguity and subjectivity of free text Position Descriptions, CVs, and Performance Reviews.  It is also within their subjectivity that bias thrives and diversity dies.
